By studying design documents, software and hardware tools installed at gas complex facilities, consulting with design organizations and software developers, the authors researched the topicality information modeling technology use in the context of the lifecycle of capital construction facilities. The main trends of the development and improvement of the information modeling technology are listed. The topicality of its application in the gas industry is determined, and the main advantages of the application of this technology in design, construction and operation, are specified. Tasks performed by the information modeling technology use are reviewed. Ways improving the efficiency of the new technology application are proposed. The information modeling technology use is noted to closely linked to the improvement of project management methods, including the implementation of the so-called model-oriented project management approach. Solution the tasks of the information modeling technology effective application is connected with difficulties caused by “systemic breakdowns” and “domains of uncertainty” occurring during transition from one lifecycle phase to another one. The system engineering methods in the project management allow eliminating these "domains of uncertainty". This practice is known and tested in the investment environment of Gazprom PJSC. Decision-making in producing unified approaches for all members of the project management is necessary both during the period of the investment cycle and during the operating activity. Improvement of business processes is concluded to be necessary for the new technology use. No successful implementation and application are possible without it. The task of the information modeling technology large-scale implementation therefore fully complies with the vector of a nationwide risk-oriented approach to controlling and inspecting hazardous production facilities.
