The article discusses the consistent patterns of development of the extraction and processing sectors of gas industry of the Russian Federation, considering current trends in the global gas supply system. The structure of the current state of gas production in the country with differentiation by federal districts and companies is analyzed, the special aspects of gas processing development by regions are investigated. In 2017, the gas production in Russia increased by 8 % compared with the previous year, which was due to increased demand from a number of European countries. The increase in demand is due to the cold winter in Europe and the competitiveness of Russian gas relative to other energy sources. The Ural Federal District, primarily the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, remains the leader in natural gas production in Russia. The development of the gas processing and gas chemical industries is analyzed in detail. Industry-wide trends are associated with the rapid growth of fat gas production (with a high content of ethane, propane, butane fractions) in the north of Western Siberia and in the future in the eastern regions of Russia. This requires the development of gas processing facilities and effective utilization and processing of all associated components. Priorities for the development of the industry associated with the expansion and construction of gas processing and gas chemical facilities are highlighted.
