Sergey I. Grachev started his labor activity in Megion and Varegan Drilling Departments, where he worked his way up from Assistant Driller to Process Engineer (1975–1980).
He has been working in the higher school from 1980 (Tyumen Industrial Institute). In 1985, he finished the extra-mural postgraduate course of Tyumen Industrial Institute. He is engaged in educational work at the Department of Oil and Gas Wells Drilling from 1980 in the capacity of Assistant (to 1986), Senior Teacher (1986), Associate Professor (1986–1998); from 1998 – Professor of the Department of Drilling of Tyumen State Oil and Gas University. He was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Economy of industrial production and drilling of wells from 1991 to 1992; Dean of the General Engineering Faculty of TII (Tyumen Industrial Institute) in Nizhnevartovsk from 1995, Director of the Branch of Tyumen State Oil and Gas University in Nizhnevartovsk from 1997. He was appointed to the position of the Pro-Rector for Learning and Teaching in the branches of the University in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area in 2002; Head of the Department of Development and Operation of Oil Fields of the Institute of Geology and Oil and Gas Production (IGOGP) of Tyumen State Oil and Gas University in 2004 and Director of IGOGP in 2008.
Nizhnevartovsk Faculty of General Engineering under his leadership achieved the status of the branch, a package of documents regarding its renaming in Nizhnevartovsk Institute of Oil and Gas was obtained. He established the Department of Designing, Construction and Operation of Oil Wells.
He has undergone professional skills upgrading on the line of TACIS in leading foreign oil producing companies and universities (Austria, Germany, Italy, Cyprus). He was trained in Komerint and Agip companies for practical actions on a full-size computer-based simulator using mathematical models, completely simulating well conditions. There are appropriate certificates according to the results of training.
He specializes in the issues of construction and operation of directional and horizontal wells. Main works are dedicated to solution of the problems of improvement of efficiency of use of modern technologies for improvement of well oil extraction drilling in process technical-and-economic indicators. A plan of technical and process actions on construction and operation of designer wells developed with contributions from S. I. Grachev is realized at 20 horizontal and more than 100 directional designer wells, including 6 wells with a bottom hole deviation up to 2,500 m and 3 multibranch horizontal wells at fields of the Western Siberia. The results of the researches are stated in 11 scientific technical reports and 22 projects on Van-Eganskoye, Vat-Eganskoye, Kalchinskoye, Koshilskoye, Malochernogorskoye, Samotlorskoye, Yuzhnoye and Chernogorskoye fields.
12 Candidate's Dissertations were prepared and defended under his leadership. He heads training of the postgraduate course and seekers. He opposed to the dissertation defense repeatedly.
He is the author of more than 150 scientific papers, including 10 inventions and 7 monographs. He participated in regional, Russian and international scientific and practical conferences and seminars.
A member of the Dissertation Committee on Conferment of Academic Degrees of Doctor of Engineering and Candidate of Engineering Д 511.001.02 and Vice-Chairman of the Dissertation Committee Д 212.273.01 under Tyumen State Oil and Gas University from 2000.
A member of the Academic Council of Tyumen State Oil and Gas University from 1995. A member of the Scientific and Technical Council of NizhnevartovskNIPIneft. He takes part in work of the Association of Scientific-Technical and Business Cooperation on Geophysical Investigations and Well Intervention (AIS Association). A member of the local branch of the Central Development Committee of the Federal Subsoil Resources Management Agency in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area.
