(SHELF DEVELOPMENT)

(CURRENT STATE OF DEVELOPMENT OF ARCTIC OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS FIELDS)

Offshore fields, primarily located in the Arctic and Far Eastern seas, are becoming increasingly important due to the deteriorating structure of natural hydrocarbon reserves in the Russian Federation. The development of offshore fields requires an integrated solution to technical, technological, and environmental problems. Arctic offshore fields are the most challenging due to the region’s harsh natural, climatic, and ice conditions. The key differences in their development compared to onshore fields are their specific arrangement and associated additional constraints in terms of the development systems used and the number of wells available for use, and the need to apply expensive high-tech solutions.
The article reviews the modern development practices of offshore oil and gas fields in Russia and abroad. It discusses hydrocarbon production systems used, including Arctic and near-Arctic conditions, unravels the dependence of used designs on sea depths, ice conditions, and other factors.
