(LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG))

(THERMOACOUSTIC NATURAL GAS LIQUEFACTION)

The paper covers the main natural gas liquefaction processes and highlights the challenges associated with their practical implementation. In order to overcome the existing challenges, a process is proposed that relies on the thermoacoustic principle of wave generation in a gas medium when heated to a certain temperature. A literature review has shown that currently the application of the thermoacoustic effect in refrigeration devices is being actively pursued. The authors of these studies reach cryogenic temperatures. This demonstrates the possibility of applying the thermoacoustic principle for natural gas liquefaction.
Besides liquefaction, the thermoacoustic effect is being considered for energy recovery in natural gas regasification and LNG storage at jetties and ports. Of practical interest is the production of household air-conditioners and industrial refrigerators with thermoacoustic cooling, which do not require very low temperatures.
According to the review of scientific publications, it was concluded that the benefits of the considered process include simple and compact design, significant savings on the purchase (due to low cost) and repair (due to longer intervals between repairs) of equipment. The paper presents an in-house prototype of a thermoacoustic unit. It gives the parameters achieved by the unit. Authors describe the design of one of the main parts of the unit – the regenerator. The paper considers the specific implementation of the process in LNG production and estimates its cost effectiveness. The results achieved suggest that thermoacoustic refrigeration is a promising application. Further research is required to develop this area of application.
