(THERMOACOUSTIC COLD GENERATOR: POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS AND DESIGN FEATURES)

The article reviews scientific researches in the field of thermoacoustic cooling to identify pros and contras of the technology and its potential applications. In this regard, it describes various options of classification thermoacoustic refrigerators. Among other issues, it focuses on choosing the material for the regenerator, being a crucial part of any thermoacoustic device. Analysis of the scientific sources has shown that porous structures are used as a material for both the stack (for standing wave devices) and the regenerator (for travelling wave devices). Using steel and ceramics gives the best results. The article also overviews such options as a multilayer generator and a cenosphere filled generator.
The interest in thermoacoustic devices is due to their ability generate cold in a wide range of temperatures, their mobility, and reliability due to a small number of non-friction moving parts. This technology can be used in household and industrial refrigerators, freezers, in the production of semiconductor materials for military applications, and for cooling of astronomical detectors. Cooling and liquefaction of associated petroleum gases, as well as the liquefaction of natural gas, are the areas of particular interest. These are pressing issues because most oil and gas fields are remote from the consumers, and in some regions, the level of gasification is low. Traditional processes based on mixed refrigerants, turbo expanders, and cascade cycles usually require expensive equipment and further maintenance. In this regard, thermoacoustic installations are free from these shortcomings, which makes it clear that further progress in this field is highly desirable.
