(CONSTRUCTION AND OIL-AND-GAS PIPELINES’ OPERATION)

(EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF GAS STRATIFICATION IN SMALL-DIAMETER PIPES)

Displacement of various gases from a gas pipeline is a routine task during construction, overhaul, re-construction, revamp, preservation, and de-commissioning of gas pipelines. Gas stratification should be avoided, in order to completely remove the gas initially present in the pipeline. Displacement of nitrogen, air, gas/air mixture, or natural gas at main gas pipeline site facilities is associated with a higher risk of stratification due to complex configuration of piping, wide variety of pipe sizes and pipe connections to process equipment having various designs. This article focuses on the selection of the minimum allowable velocity of displacing gas, at which one gas will displace another gas out of small-diameter pipes (up to 120 mm, when the displacing gas is natural gas and the displaced gas is air) thus preventing stratification.
The objective of the study is to experimentally identify the most accurate method to determine the minimum allowable velocity of displacing gas for gas displacement out of small-diameter pipes. The authors analyzed approaches applied in international practices, which are based on creating a turbulent flow of the displacing gas, and reviewed experimental data. It is noted that there is currently no common approach for selecting minimum allowable velocity of displacing gas for small-diameter pipes. The authors point out that an experimental study is needed to investigate the process. The test setup and experimental procedure are described in the article. It contains diagrams showing longitudinal and transverse distribution of displacing and displaced gas concentrations in a pipe in various stratification conditions. The authors suggest that values obtained from experiments should be used as a way to determine the minimum allowable velocity of carbon dioxide or nitrogen for air displacement. The study showed that methods currently used to determine the minimum allowable velocity of natural gas for air displacement are impractical, and additional experiments to determine the velocity for natural gas are needed.
The results are of practical importance in terms of regulation of activities preventing stratification when a gas is used to force another gas out of a gas pipeline.
