(LONG-TERM ICEBERG DRIFT MODEL TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION SPECIFIC FEATURES OF INTERACTION OF ICEBERGS WITH ICE COVER, AND MODEL VERIFICATION BASED ON FIELD DATA FROM THE BARENTS SEA)

When selecting the conceptual framework for the development of offshore hydrocarbon fields in the Barents Sea and Kara Sea, it is critical to consider quantitative characteristics of iceberg hazards, in particular, the frequency of occurrence of drifting icebergs in the relevant area. The frequency can be assessed either on the basis of statistical analysis of iceberg observation data, which yields an empirical value of the frequency of occurrence of icebergs, or by engaging in detailed modelling of the trajectories of icebergs drifting from the producing glaciers using stochastic models of various degree of complexity, which yields an estimated value of that indicator. For water areas located far from producing glaciers, where data are scarce, heterogeneous, and occasionally incomplete, modelling – which over the last several decades has been used more and more extensively – appears to be the more preferable approach. Its implementation involves the use of an iceberg drift numerical model as a crucial research tool.
The article presents an improved long-term iceberg drift model which can be successfully employed for large-scale numeric computations vital for the implementation of stochastic techniques to quantify iceberg hazards. The authors developed a new parametrization to describe interactions between icebergs and ice cover in cases when the size of an iceberg is comparable to, or less than, a size of individual floes – which is rather typical for Arctic offshore areas of Russia. Reliability of the model was tested on drift data for three icebergs obtained by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in the course of several ice research projects in the Barents Sea in 2004, 2005, and 2007. Verification findings demonstrate strong consistency between field data and numeric modelling outcomes.
