(UNDERGROUND GAS STORAGES)

(EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF GASEOUS CO₂ METAL CORROSION IN SUBSURFACE EQUIPMENT OF UNDERGROUND GAS STORAGE FACILITIES UNDER STATIC AND DYNAMIC CONDITIONS)

Storage of carbon dioxide in rock formations is one of the world’s most widely utilized technologies for mitigating environmental impact. Placing CO2 in geological formations for a long period requires assessing its impact on corrosion processes in the metal of subsurface and surface equipment of gas storage facilities.
Unless special dehydration measures are implemented, CO2 injected into a well contains a certain amount of water. Furthermore, condensed water droplets may be present on the metal surfaces of downhole strings. In presence of water, CO2 has a strong corrosive effect on unprotected metal surfaces of a production string, a tubing string, and subsurface equipment, which can lead to dangerous damage to metal structures.
Since injection of CO2 into a well is a dynamic process, experimental determination of the corrosion rate must account for the gas flow velocity and be conducted under conditions that simulate the downhole environment. The work is aimed at assessing the effect of gaseous CO2 on metal corrosion under static and dynamic conditions.
Autoclave tests were carried out to evaluate the metal corrosion rate, and a methodology for conducting them was proposed, using an autoclave equipped with a device for creating a dynamic flow. The flows generated in the autoclave cause corrosion wear on the sample surface, similar to the wear on inner surfaces of the tubing in underground gas storage facilities’ wells during CO2 injection.
