(SIGNIFICANCE OF UNDERGROUND GAS STORAGE FACILITIES FOR RUSSIA’S ENERGY SECURITY)
The article contains an analysis of the role underground gas storage facilities play in ensuring the reliable operation of the Unified Gas Supply System of Russia and energy security of the country. The contributors note the particular importance of underground gas storage facilities in support of stable development of gas fields and, consequently, for increasing gas recovery of reservoirs and maximum utilization of equipment by gas transmission companies. The article presents the results of preparations for the 2022/23 gas withdrawal season in Russia, Armenia, and Belarus. The necessity to boost the underground gas storage system development in Russia is shown against the background of external challenges and the growing demand for natural gas in the domestic market. The contribution of peak load underground gas storage facilities in rock salt deposits to the energy security of the Central and Northwestern Federal Districts of Russia is described in detail. Cooperation with China regarding the construction of underground gas storage facilities on its territory is discussed separately. The authors note the relevance of development of domestic technologies for the storage of renewable gases (CO2, hydrogen, biogas) and introduction of a system of strategic oil storages in Russia.
