(COMPARATIVE STUDY OF WALL THICKNESS CALCULATION PRACTICES FOR MAIN GAS PIPELINES BUILT FROM HIGH GRADE PIPES)
Scientific and technological development of the gas industry in Russia calls for a continuous search for and introduction of advanced materials, equipment, and processes into the gas pipeline engineering, construction, and operation. One of the most important areas in this activity is the production and use of materials with improved strength specifications.
This article examines how increasing the strength class of steel pipes for main gas pipelines in Russia can change the design wall thickness. The article shows that although one of the objectives of introducing such pipes is to reduce the amount of steel consumed, it is quite the opposite in the pipeline construction in Russia. The most important cause of this is the safety margin system used in the pipe strength analysis method, which was introduced more than 60 years ago.
The article considers options for the potential wall thicknesses for future main gas pipelines in Russia and shows that there exist a number of alternative scenarios to calculate the design thickness that can significantly reduce the same by updating applicable codes and standards. And pipeline stress will be provided with a safety margin fully consistent with global construction practices. This article provides suggestions on how update the wall thickness sizing method for main gas pipelines in Russia, which can provide significant economic benefits without compromising the reliability and safety of such facilities.
