(GAS AND GAS CONDENSATE TRANSPORTATION)

(EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON THE EQUILIBRIUM WATER VAPOR CONTENT IN METHANE WITHIN THE TEMPERATURE RANGE OF 233.15–293.15 K AND PRESSURE UP TO 12.5 MPA)

An original rig and a precision experimental technique for studying the water vapor content in compressed methane in equilibrium with methane hydrate and liquid water have been developed. The technique includes the equilibrium with supercooled water at negative Celsius temperatures (under thermodynamic stability of methane hydrate and hexagonal ice).
In an experimental flow-through rig, a method of methane saturation with water vapor is implemented, followed by water phase condensation from the gaseous methane in four sequentially thermostatic separator-freezers, in which a given temperature is maintained. In the end separator-freezer the temperature is maintained with an accuracy ± 0.1 K and equilibrium is achieved between the compressed methane saturated with water vapor and the condensed water phase (i. e. liquid water, ice or hydrate), depending on temperature and pressure conditions. Water dew point of the methane is measured with various condensation hygrometers, both at a given pressure in the end separator and at atmospheric pressure. In addition, measurements of moisture content (molar fraction of water vapor in methane) are carried out by the electrolytic method at atmospheric pressure.
Experimental study of the equilibrium water vapor content in gas phase for the “methane – liquid water” and “methane – hydrate” systems were carried out at temperatures from 233.15 to 293.15 K with a step of 10 K and methane pressures in the range of 1.0 to 12.5 MPa. A novel experimental data were obtained on the saturated water vapor content of methane under different thermobaric conditions in equilibrium with both hydrate and supercooled water. The obtained experimental data correspond to the conditions adopted in the gas industry for measuring of natural gas dew point on supercooled water by condensation hygrometers. The experimental results are compared with the available literature data on the equilibrium “methane – liquid water” at positive temperatures and “methane – hydrate” at negative Celsius temperatures.
A thermodynamic correlation has been developed for describing the experimental data with an error not more than 5 % (corresponds to ~0.5 K in dew point units). The correlation may be used for calculating the water vapor content in compressed methane at given pressure and temperature, as well as for determining the water dew point at known water content in methane and its pressure (using an iterative procedure).
