(ASSESSMENT OF ACCUMULATED FATIGUE DAMAGE IN GT90 STEEL COILED TUBING BASED ON ELECTRICAL SIGNAL RESPONSE PARAMETERS)

During operation of coiled tubing used in coiled tubing technologies, the tubing material is subjected to intensive cyclic loading due to repeated bending and straightening during tripping operations. The accumulation of fatigue damage in the material they made of increases the risk of failures during well intervention operation. Therefore, the development of non-destructive testing methods capable of assessing the degree of material degradation at various stages of the tubing life cycle and ensuring timely withdrawal from service remains an important task. The purpose of the study was to select a diagnostic parameter sensitive to degradation of GT90 steel during tripping operations using eddy current testing, and to establish a calibration relationship between electrical signal response parameters and the level of accumulated fatigue damage.

The research methodology is based on testing flat specimens of GT90 steel under low-cycle bending conditions, while simultaneously recording electrical signal response parameters using an eddy current transducer. The analysis was performed based on the values of the mean electrical signal response voltage recorded during cyclic deformation. It was found that with increasing accumulated damage, the mean response voltage increases and exhibits a linear relationship with the level of accumulated fatigue damage. The obtained dependence can be used to quantify the degree of material degradation during operation of coiled tubing in coiled tubing applications.

Microstructural analysis of coiled tubing cross-section showed that after operation, the average ferrite grain size increases, whereas the average pearlite grain size decreases.

The proposed approach expands the capabilities of non-destructive testing of coiled tubing and opens up prospects for the implementation of intelligent coiled tubing diagnostic systems in the oil and gas industry, thereby minimizing the risks of failures under intensive cyclic loading conditions.
