(ONE-DIMENSIONAL COMPUTATIONAL MODEL OF GAS-LIQUID FLOW FORMED BY CAVITATION-WAVE GENERATOR IN HYDRODYNAMIC THRUST SLIDING BEARING)

The authors present a mathematical model of a cavitation-wave generator that allows calculating the hydrodynamic parameters of a gas–liquid flow in a narrow, elongated channel that simulates the hydrodynamic groove of a water-lubricated sliding thrust bearing. The model is based on the Bernoulli and continuity equations for a variable cross-section channel, accounting for changes in the gas void fraction, effective density, and mixture velocity during the ejection of ballast liquid and air. The experimental part was carried out on a transparent model device using a Venturi tube as the cavitator; tap water supplied by a centrifugal vane pump served as the working medium. The study covers three operating modes, namely: no ejection, ballast water ejection, and simultaneous air supply (2–8 L/min). It was found that ballast water ejection raises the average hydrostatic pressure in the channel from 5 to 40 kPa, while the additional air supply increases it further to 77 kPa. At the same time, a visual transition from jet cavitation to a homogeneous bubbly structure is observed, accompanied by the suppression of erosion-active pulsations. The distributions of hydrostatic pressure along the channel, flow velocity, and gas void fraction were obtained. Based on the Reynolds, cavitation, and Weber numbers, the feasibility of extrapolating the results to full-scale bearing assemblies has been justified. The novelty of the work lies in the development of a one-dimensional computational model that accounts for the combined effect of liquid ejection and air ventilation on the cavitation flow parameters in a confined channel. The practical significance lies in the model’s ability to justify the hydrodynamic groove geometry and lubrication modes for designing a new class of low-friction, high-load-capacity fluid-film bearings, including low-speed friction units.
