(EFFECT OF ULTRASONIC IMPACT TREATMENT ON THE MICROHARDNESS OF A WELDED JOINT IN 09G2S PIPE STEEL)

The microhardness distribution through the thickness of a welded joint in low-alloy 09G2S steel was investigated after ultrasonic impact treatment applied to the outer and inner sides. Butt-welded specimens 8 mm thick were produced by three-pass semi-automatic gas-shielded welding. For each treatment condition – at frequencies of 20 ± 1, 37 ± 1, and 44 ± 1 kHz, applied separately to the outer and inner sides – three independent welded specimens were examined. Ultrasonic impact treatment was performed with a contact tool at a generator power setting of 200 W; the diameter of the waveguide tip was 6 mm, and the traverse speed was ~ 0.5 m/min. Microhardness (HV) was determined by the Vickers method using a PMT-3M tester along separate lines in the weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal with a spacing of 0.5 mm. Three technical indents were made at each point. At a depth of 0.5 mm, the highest response was obtained for the specimen treated on the inner surface at 20 kHz: 111.38 ± 1.59 HV in the weld metal, compared with 57.79 ± 5.48 HV before treatment (+92.7 %), and 112.14 HV in the heat-affected zone, compared with 60.79 ± 1.69 HV (+84.5 %). For treatment of the outer surface at 20 kHz, the increase was 33.9 % in the weld metal and 21.0 % in the heat-affected zone. The effect decreased with depth, whereas the base metal showed no systematic change. Metallographic results from the same experimental program showed the most pronounced grain refinement after ultrasonic impact treatment of the inner surface at 20 kHz. The data obtained characterize the conditions of a specific oscillatory system at a fixed generator output power and are not interpreted as a universal relationship dependent on frequency only.
