(INFLUENCE OF DRILLING TOOL WEAR- RESISTANT COATING THICKNESS ON ELECTROMAGNETIC LOGGING QUALITY)

This paper presents a calculation-based method for quantitatively assessing the effect of a localized wear-resistant band on the housing of a drilling tool on the quality of electromagnetic logging measurements. The band is modeled as an electrically conducting closed loop in which the alternating magnetic field of the transmitting coil (transmitter) induces eddy currents. These currents generate a secondary field in the band and a parasitic component at the receiving coil (receiver), resulting in amplitude-phase distortions. Relationships are obtained that link the geometry of the modeled assembly, the electromagnetic properties of the material, and the thickness of the protective layer to the level of parasitic coupling and an integral logging-quality index. The calculation procedure is supplemented by an estimate of the service life of the coating based on wear-test data, which makes it possible to construct dependencies of logging quality on operating time and to vary them by selecting the material, thickness, and layout of the protective elements.

The calculations were performed for WC–Co cemented carbides, hardfacing layers, polycrystalline diamond (PDC) inserts on a cemented-carbide substrate, as well as electrically insulating ceramic coatings. It is shown that, for conductive and magnetic materials, increasing the coating thickness improves service life; however, this is accompanied by a reduction in logging quality, especially when the band is located close to the antenna-coil assemblies: the quality index decreases to 45–70 %. Increasing the distance between the band and the coils significantly reduces the parasitic influence and maintains logging quality at 93–97 %. For electrically insulating ceramics that provide the required wear resistance, the deterioration in logging quality over the considered thickness range is negligible, which makes them promising. The proposed approach can be used for preliminary selection of the coating material and thickness, as well as for substantiating design measures aimed at reducing eddy-current effects.
